Hello All!
BIG news this week. We’d like to announce the official launching of the Anthology Video page, and the Anthology Live & Archival Series!
The Anthology Video page offers rare & exclusive footage of artists featured on the site. From interviews and live performances and more, our video selection will grow slowly but surely into a resource for fans of digging deeper into the artists on Anthology. Many of these videos come available with the purchase of that artist's full album. Those familiar with our weekly editorial section will now see bi-weekly rotations between this new site and our editorial features. To start it off right, we’ve got an amazing video interview with the acid-folk legend Linda Perhacs, conducted by Andy Beta. Hope you enjoy! The Anthology Live & Archival Series is a group of hand picked, exclusive releases culled from unreleased, live, demo and b-sides, available as high-quality MP3s with full cooperation and permission by the artists. To start the series off, we’ve made 2 releases available this week. The Canada psych band Simply Saucer collection entitled Saucerland compiles never before heard recordings of Saucer performing live between 1975 and 1985. For folks new to the band, this album is a great place to start. For those as obsessed with Here Come The Cyborgs as much as we are, this is an ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL recording to hear! No less amazing is the Live In San Francisco: March 16, 2003 exclusive release by Fifty Foot Hose. This rare document of the band who brought us Cauldron, one of the most innovative psychedelic records to emerge from the 1960’s (and one of the most overlooked records to come out in the Summer of Love), gives us a glimpse as to what the band is up to these days, and how their musical talents are stronger today than ever!
Stay tuned for more videos, more Live & Archival, and of course more reissues and rarities in the weeks to come...

Greetings from Anthology!
We've been hard at work here getting ready to launch our Anthology Video page, a place for visitors of the site to watch rare and exclusive footage of artists featured on our label. From interviews and live performances to ahead-of-their-time “music videos” and lost television clips, our video selection delves further into the time and place from which these records were created, completing the picture of many of the underground artists behind them. Be on the look out for its launching within the week! Now, on to the highlights of our newest releases...
Some Anthology Exclusives are available this week - new releases you can only get here. From our own Anthology label we have two incredible releases by Exmagma, Exmagma 3 and Exmagma & Goldball. This is highly recommended music for fans of progressive, jazz, and improvised music - think Soft Machine and Bitches Brew. From the French Soleil Zeuhl label - another Anthology Exclusives label - we've got some exceptional albums by Eskaton, entitled Ardeur and Fiction. Both of these equally delve into the undefinable world of experimental rock and prog. Words do no justice to this music - it must be heard to be believed!
Chapter Music offers us a great compilation - the Amateurism comps gives insight to the beginnings of Australian's indie-pop scene. Andrew Wilson's projects included Four Gods and Frontier Scouts, and Andrew Wilson And Associates, many of which played regular gigs with The Go-Betweens, a certain influence on these bands at the time.
Gear Fab records comes out with another stunning release by Gandalf The Grey, New York's unknown folk-rock hero, with The Tin Angel - a collection of rare never before heard demos recorded between 1966 and 1969. These songs all retain a delicate feel, with subtle orchestrations and memorable melodies. Recommended!
A new slew of Sundazed titles will make their way to the site shortly. For starters we're celebrating this new batch of awesomeness with Guitar Freakout! by The Animated Egg. These surf-psych instrumentals came to be by producer Jerry Cole and his various LA bands, including Generation Gap, T. Swift and the Electric Bag, Projection Company, and Stone Canyon Rock Group. Anyone who knows Sundazed Records knows the quality to expect from their superb releases. This one is no exception.
That's all for this week's release highlights. Keep a look out for our video page launch, and a new Plastic Crimewave podcast as well...

Greetings from Anthology!
Hope this summer is treating you well. Whether enduring the heat or watching the rain from your window, this batch of new releases is bound to keep you entertained through all the weird weather. From the bizarre and chaotic prog sounds of the Soleil Zeuhl label to the exotic, LSD infused country of Jack & Misty, this week's highlights are no doubt eclectic...
Soleil Zeuhl, an astounding French prog & experimental label has released their first of a series of exclusive releases on Anthology this week. Archaia’s self-titled album uses anthemic synth themes and angular song structures, drawing influence from Magma but by no means referencing them. Dun’s Eros album, a highly progressive fusion album from a group who changed their name 3 times after covering Mahavishnu Orchestra’s music initially, pushes the technical envelope with Zappa-esque compositions. Shub Niggurath’s 1982 self-released Introduction album transcends pretty much all genres, drawing influence from modern classical, metal, jazz, and funk—all topped with dark & brooding vocal melodies.
As our Gearfab catalog grows, the music just seems to get better and better. Tayles were a Madison band who’s risqué lyrics got them banned from radio play multiple times. Who Are These Guys? compiles their 1971 singles and their 1972 full-length release. The less garage-influenced and more soulful Ivory released their self-titled album in 1968, capturing the west coast psychedelic sound fused with the R&B vocal harmonies of that time. Stack, another LA band, is a must have for those into the heavier rock releases à la Cream. Above All is an amazingly powerful psych-pop album with all the trimmings: heavy riffs, insane drumming, and solid vocals. Highly recommended! And lastly we’ve got a self-titled album from Sleepy John, a bluesy fuzz-rock band from the Northwest, whose Hammond organ dominates the recording, in a good way of course.
Another batch of exceptional releases from The Omni Recording Company makes its way to the list—Bruce Haack’s Haackula is an oddity with its co-production by legendary hip-hop producer Russell Simmons, a much creepier excursion Haack’s compositional world compared to Electric Lucifer. Malvina Reynolds’ self-titled reissue on Omni is another sonic wonder, a grandma who played folk guitar tunes with charged lyrics about LSD, DDT, and the Vietnam War. Lastly, Jack Blanchard And Misty Morgan’s Life And Death (And Almost Everything Else) has to be the singularly most interesting record we’ve heard all summer—the liner notes call this wacky Miami duo “Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood on acid” – that description barely scratches the surface of how interesting this cosmic country album really is. Recommended!
Chapter Music brings us a reissue from the Primitive Calculators, a self-titled release of live recordings by this late 70s Australian post-punk group who drew influence from The Fugs and the Gods and the Velvets. This is a great combination of electronic drums and rock instrumentation- certainly for the Suicide and Cabaret Voltaire fans.
From Cherry Red we’ve got the self-titled Fox album, a band named after lead vocalist Noosha Fox, a unique female vocal sound signature of the glam era. Originally released on the GTO label (home of Gary Glitter etc.), Fox received a bit less commercial success than its neighboring glam releases, but did make the top 10 radio charts along the way, and is being rediscovered as a glam classic for its unique pop sensibility. The Flatmates collection Potpourri: Hits, Mixes and Demos '85-'89 is a great one for newcomers to this fantastic 80’s British indie-pop band. Rising from the Subway Organization label, they released a handful of singles, available here, in addition to some unreleased demos that are a pleasant contrast to the studio productions. Obscure English band The Reflections reissue is available – the Slugs and Toads is reminiscent of other English post-punk outfits such as The TV Personalities, although with more angular arrangements and wow – a Roky Erickson cover! Features a member of Alternative TV – great stuff…
The Elysian Fields label offers yet another excellent Terry Riley reissue: Poppy Nogood And The Phantom Band All Night Flight is a 40 minute piece recorded at SUNY Buffalo, New York, in1968. Riley plays soprano saxophone, organ, and electronics- the result is a gorgeous drone piece with pulsating arpeggios, and massive dynamic swells.
Freestyle Records artist Ray Camacho & The Teardrops comes out this week with a collection entitled The Best Of Ray Camacho And The Teardrops: Chicano Salsa, Funk, Cumbia & Soul 1968 to 1971. The name couldn’t be anymore clear – these genres fuse into some of the funkiest, and musically tight recordings we’ve heard all summer.
Gronland's reissue of Neu! 75, another album from Krautrock legends that define the genre, is our final Neu! reissue. This is their last recording (but no less perfect than the others preceding it), and was pretty much their last efforts as a band before Michael Rother pursued a solo career and Klaus Dinger went on form La Düsseldorf.
From Light in the Attic we’ve got Wheedles Groove, a collection of extremely rare 60s & 70s Seattle funk including Ron Buford, The Overton Berry Trio, and many more. And to follow up on the last underground classic Cold Fact by Rodriguez, we’ve got his 1971 release Coming From Reality, a slightly different interpretation of Rodriguez’s vision of “perfect pop”, but equally as addictive a listen.
That’s all for this week – more reissues and rarities coming soon!

Greetings from Anthology!
Before we get into the new releases for the week, we’d like to announce a new feature to the Anthology website. “Anthology Exclusives” has now been added to the genre section on our main page - this allows you to view all the titles available exclusively through our site and nowhere else!
From Cherry Red Records we’ve got a mind-blowing collection from Spizzenergi entitled Spizz Not Dead Shock! 1978-1988 A Decade Of Spizz History. 1978 England sure did spawn some bizarre punk music—Spizz’s many monikers and projects can be heard in this entertaining collection.
From Gear Fab this week we’ve got The Lost Warthog Tapes by Colorado’s Wakefield, a soul influenced rock group with full horn arrangements, bongos, and more. This one was never released until Gear Fab got their hands on it. Next up is the self-titled Soup album, a great blues rock album reminiscent of the early Buffalo Springfield albums. The Rugbys is equally as well done, another bluesy outfit – this time from Louisville – who play guitar riffs to their highest potential, and plenty of killer drum fills to boot.
Gronland brings one of the most influential Krautrock albums in history to Anthology this week. Neu’s Neu! 2 is a chugging groove of endless riffs, swirling tape effects and ingenious guitar layering by Michael Rother and Klaus Dinger. You’d better have a decent stereo to blast “Lilac Angel” —an unforgettable track from this classic album.
Mr. Bongo records graces us this week with the legendary recording by Incredible Bongo Band. Bongo Rock compiles funk anthems from this group, comprised of unknown musicians whose recordings went on to influence hip-hop’s early years of sampling. The opening track in particular entitled “Apache” is literally the most important and used break-beat of all time aside from James Brown’s “Funky Drummer”, and the “Amen” break. This digital version contains a special remix by Grand Master Flash himself.
We’ve launched our first of many amazing releases with the Omni Recording Company this week. Gil Trythall’s Country Moog/Nashville Gold album combines 2 records into one by the master of the Moog who utilized classic country tunes with what was at the time state of the art music technology. This is a must have for fans of Bruce Haack and Wendy Carlos.
That’s all for this week – more to come soon!

Hello Folks!
Greetings from Anthology— It’s been an exciting few weeks over here. From amazing live events to exceptional reissues finding their new home in the Anthology catalog, we’ve got plenty to share with you in this week’s news.
For starters, we’d like to thank those who attended Bobb Trimble’s powerful performance at the Rose Bar in Brooklyn. Special thanks to Bobb and his band, Rotter & Friends, Kris Thompson, Arizona, Zygo, Mexican Summer (who blew minds with the killerr 7 inch record), Secretly Canadian, Turquoise Wisdom, Brian from Awesome Tapes from Africa, Viva Radio, as well as the countless others who contributed their time and energy to make the event such a success. For party photos of the event, click here.
East Village Radio's Mike Newman will start hosting a regular Anthology segment on his amazing weekly radio show entitled “Beyond Beyond is Beyond”, showcasing his favorite tracks from the Anthology catalog. To listen in, go here.
We’re happy to announce that French prog label Soleil Zeuhl will be sharing their catalog, currently available exclusively though Anthology. Now you can get digital versions of rare electronic and prog obscurities from groups like Archaïa, Potemkine, and Eskaton among others.
Lau derette, a young New York based label, launched recently with Connie Converse’s How Sad, How Lovely CD as their first release (and Connie’s first official release of her work as well). Sharing equal enthusiasm for this hauntingly beautiful album, Anthology is providing the digital release accompanied by a bonus track available exclusively through Anthology and a gorgeous digital booklet when purchased as the full album.
Tompkins Square records will soon release a CD reissue of Powell St. John’s On My Way to Houston, a new recording by this long time rocker who has seen and done it all, including playing in a band with the young Janis Joplin. We’re pleased to celebrate their release a bit early with the exclusive digital version, available here first! Backed by Rocky Erickson’s band The Aliens, and performing a never recorded composition by Rocky as well, this is not an album to be overlooked.
Omni Recording Company, a label responsible for the recent resurgence of interest in electronic legend Bruce Haack, is now releasing music digitally here at Anthology. From Haack’s classic Electric Lucifer to the rebellious outsider country of Malvina Reynolds, we’re thrilled to have these eclectic titles here in our catalog.
From Gear Fab this week is an exclusive digital release from The Neutral Spirits, a garage outfit from Tennessee whose highly sought after self-titled LP was destroyed in a house fire. Great stuff from a teenage band that started off their days playing gigs at roller rinks and pizza joints!
From the Spanish label Guerssen we’ve got a second album from Portland’s Tree People. Released in 1984 on cassette, Human Voices has remained almost entirely unheard by psych-folk fans until now. This is a beautiful recording with lush arrangements and unique instrumentation, a nice follow-up to their self-titled album.
From Auralux Recordings we’ve got one of the finest dub records available out this week. Linval Thompson & Friends Whip them King Tubby features contributions by Bunny Lee, King Tubby, and several others. If you’re a fan of heavy, deep drumming, this record is definitely a must listen.
From Cherry Red we’ve got an amazing proto-punk reissue for you—The Legendary Orgasm Album by John's Children was the precursor to punk and its many derivatives that appeared years after this 1967 release. Amazing!
Discmedi brings a great reissue to Anthology this week. Pep Laguarda & Tapineria’s Brossa D'ahir, recorded by Daevid Allen in 1976, was a psych folk rarity with a unique tropical sound to it. I’d put this up there with some of the most essential listening for the summer.
Light in the Attic offeres another incredible album, this time a soundtrack to an “adult film” entitled Lialeh, an album composed, produced and performed legendary drummer Bernard "Pretty" Purdie. Purdie worked on projects with Curtis Mayfield, Aretha, The Last Poets, The Rolling Stones, and James Brown – you can imagine the level of musicianship on this record.
Water records releases some heavy hitters this week on Anthology:
Judee Sill’s Dreams Come True - Hi - I Love You Right Heartily Here - New Songs is a long lost third album with bonus tracks in the form of demos and rehearsals. A favorite track of ours on this one is “Emerald River Dance”, a dark and introspective song among many brilliant compositions of hers. Jon Appleton and Don Cherry’s Human Music, a 1969 avant-garde collaboration between the trumpeter and electronics pioneer is a refreshingly organic piece of music; filled with fluid call and response style improvisations, the two developed a unique musical language on this recording that is certainly unclassifiable. And finally, is a release by Thomas Mapfumo and the Acid Band from 1976. Hokoyo! was released during the Rhodesian War, and appropriately coined the genre "chimurenga," a Shona word for “struggle”. This is Zimbabwean music at its finest, full of complex dance rhythms, syncopated grooves and beautiful solos.
That’s all for now… thanks for reading!

Hello Folks!
Greetings once again from the Anthology headquarters. Not too sure where you're hailing from, but here in NYC the weather is perfecto for bar-b-ques, soakin' up rays, and listening to tons of new music! I myself have been plugged in to the insane garage of Monks, the heavy dub of Creation Rebel, and the Mali 70 compilation... of course we've got a few releases to supplement your occasional rained-out BBQ as well. Read on for this week's full list of releases, reissues, and rarities...
You can now download the latest installment in Steve Krakow aka Plastic Crimewave's Podcast series FREE. This ones a scorcher and focuses on 'World Psychedelia'!
We're pleased to team up with legendary reggae/roots/dub label Auralux! From the UK, these fellas do some of the finest work in reissuing unknown, and well-known classics from the masters of the genre. We celebrate our launch of the Auralux catalog this week with The Upsetters'14 Dub Blackboard Jungle--a benchmark Lee Perry production with all the bells and whistles we've come to expect from the originator of dub (remastered in analog--wow!) The other is DC Dub Connection by Prince Jammy and Scientist--an equally hypnotic album fueled by the hard drumming of Sly Dunbar and Horsemouth Wallace.
On the topic of dub, Cherry Red Records reissue of Creation Dub's Lows and Highs--produced by the legendary Adrian Sherwood--is also available this week.. certainly an incredible record from an innovative group who was one of the first to pull off the dub sound in a live performance. Certainly not dub, but drawing influence from rhythm no less, is the mysterious British post-punk outfit A Tent with an album called Six Empty Spaces... great stuff for fans of Ike Yard, This Heat, Tuxedomoon, et al.
We're now working with Discograph / Syllart Productions, a label who releases exceptional music from various African regions. Starting off their extensive label with a great one, the Mali 70 is an incredible compilation of 1960's and 1970's African music produced by Ibrahima Sylla, one of the most influential producers of African music at that time.
Light in the Attic reissue Black Monk Time by Monks has finally been added to the Anthology catalog. For those new to these ex-Pats who relocated to Germany to, quite literally, redefine garage music with their bizarro lyrics and addictive pop hooks--you're in for a treat! This is a must have for anyone delving into the chasm of garage psychedelia--Black Monk Time is a staple purchase.
LRC Ltd. offers another fine Jimmy McGriff album to Anthology this week, this time with Fly Dude, an appropriate name for Philadelphia's king of blues organ.
Another label new to Anthology's line up, Public Flipper Limited LLC, offers the Generic album by Flipper. This band is serious business; surely the west coast yielded some fantastic hard core and derivatives of punk rock, but there's something so unique about Flipper's post punk leanings, a cynicism and intelligence that perfectly meshes with their driving guitar tones. Great stuff!
Anyone who read my rant on last week's news section can guess that we're Loop fans over here at Anthology. Well, thankfully we've supplemented Fade Out with another riffy drone gem entitled Heaven's End. For a first release, this one is right on the money... a perfect combination of early punk, kraut, and stoner influences.
RPM group Mirage releases Tomorrow Never Knows, Singles & Lost Sessions 1966-1968, a collection of tracks from this UK psych-pop group known for backing Elton John during his earlier song writing days.
Sterns Records brings a great compilation to Anthology this week. Belle Epoque Volume 1: Soundiata, a collection of tracks from the Rail Band, featuring vocals Salif Keita and Mory Kante. Recorded between 1970 – 1975, this fantastic album captures the years in which African music began to garner attention outside its native borders.
Following the excellent Peter Walker release last month, we're happy to release yet another exceptional folk rarity from Tompkins Square Recordings. Harry Taussig's Fate Is Only Once was a self-relesed private pressing from 1965. For you Fahey fans, this is a gorgeous performance in the Takoma style.
Lastly, we've got 2 more outstanding reissues--both live performances--courtesy of the Water label. Judee Sill's Live In London - The BBC Recordings 1972 - 1973, a stunning collection of Judee's solo performances of vocals, piano, and guitar--including multiple versions of songs previously unreleased from the BBC archives. The other is Terry Reid's Silver White Light-Live At The Isle Of Wight 1970 by Terry Reid. Featuring 9 original Reid songs--two of which appear on The River--this recordings captures raw performances following Terry's self-imposed exile in the US.
That's it for now.. don't forget to check out Alan Licht's editorial on Elodie Lauten accompanied by a free download from The Death of Don Juan.

Greetings from Anthology!
This week’s roundup of new releases brings some really eclectic reissues; from the bizarre LSD infused chants of Bill Bissett to the fuzzed-out, guitar drones of Loop—there’s something for everyone in this batch of rarities, most of which come from labels that Anthology has recently added to our select catalog curation. Read on for more…
The prolific Tuxedomoon album You, on Crammed Records, is available this week. Known for their contributions to the NYC No-Wave scene, Tuxedomoon’s last studio album was produced well after the height of that particular era, but is quite engaging and just as fresh as their earlier works.
Gear Fab artists Fever Tree releases San Francisco Girls a digital release exclusive to Anthology Recordings, and an absolute must-listen for fans of blues-rock and psych. Their interpretations of “Day-Tripper” as well as original songs such as the chart making title track earned them notoriety among the countless psych-pop bands to emerge from the late 60s.
Anthology is pleased to announce that we’ve begun reissuing titles from the excellent Groenland label. Groenland has reissued, among several genres, the works of German bands like Roedelius, Harmonia, and others. The highly-influential band Neu! came out this week here—the self-titled album that first introduced their signature sound of streamlined guitar repetitions, half speed wanderings, and endless-groove drumming. Excellent stuff! Stay tuned for more reissues by Neu! In the weeks to come.
Light In The Attic offers an incredible, long overdue reissue of the Cold Fact release by Rodriguez—the mysterious 60’s songwriter hailing from Detroit, who oddly enough remained virtually unheard in the United States until his rediscovery in the 1990’s. This catchy pop brings to mind the arrangements of Love’s music, but with altogether different lyrics (often political) and a signature sound that makes me wonder how this slipped between the cracks during the era of its creation.
From Lyrichord we’ve got Lower Caste Religious Music From India, a comprehensive collection of Indian music--both religious and secular—covering a vast repertoire of native sounds. The liner notes go into great detail as to how this music functions within the various social castes or varnas that exist in Indian cultures.
Quannum Projects, a label known for their respected releases in hip-hop, rare groove, and funk is now available digitally through Anthology. Our first reissue with them is A New Day! The Complete Mus-I-Col Recordings of JC Davis, a collection of hard funk tracks from the saxophonist and vocalist who led The Famous Flames, James Brown’s band at the time. This one is a scorcher, with incredible drumming (no doubt sampled by someone somewhere) and infectious soul grooves a la The Meters.
Yet another new label Anthology has teamed up with is Reactor—Loop founder’s own label—starting off their catalog proper with a digital reissue of Loop’s Fade Out release from 1988. Loop does an astounding job of blending some of the most vibrant musical styles—late 60’s Detroit rock (Stooges & MC5’s heavy stoner-punk riffs) and the repetition of Kraut rock to emerge from 1970’s Europe. Not to exaggerate, but this is essential listening for fans of Spaceman 3, Velvet Underground, Bark Psychosis, etc, etc, etc….
Sterns records (yes, another new label we’re excited to work with!) launches their first release with Anthology with Orchestra Baobab’s Bamba. This is a collection of their last recordings, performed live in 1980. For folks new to Baobab, this is a fantastic introduction to Africas most celebrated dance band. For those who know the greatness of their enormous body of recordings, expect another incredible one to add to the collection!
From Warning Label records we’ve got a collection of the early tracks from The Urinals entitled Negative Capability...Check It Out!, the notorious LA punk pranksters who made some of the most clever 45 second songs to emerge from the 80’s punk era. Some of these songs are so powerful, for example the track “I’m Like You”, you’d never guess they’re backed up with a toy drum set.
And finally, Water Records--the excellent reissue label responsible for Michael Rother’s solo gems, Albert Ayler, and Baby Huey—celebrates their catalog digitally with 2 amazing reissues on Anthology. Still Valentines Day, 1969, Live At The Matrix, San Francisco is Sandy Bull’s captivating performance of eastern influenced guitar and oud mastery, only to be ingeniously complimented by subtle tape-loops of Chuck Berry! Amazing. The other is Are You Serious? by Van Duren. Duren was a multi-instrumentalist and major songwriter from the power pop scene in the late 70’s who started his career working alongside members of Big Star. Although this one features none of those collaborators, it was still quite a successful release in its time and garnered plenty of FM attention.
That’s it for this week.. hope you enjoy this week's releases, and we’ll see ya soon!

Hello Folks!
Before getting into the lengthy list of releases for this week, we’d like to announce that Anthology has joined Twitter! Click here to follow weekly up to date coverage of Anthology new releases, features, events, and more!
This week brings another unique release available exclusively on Anthology Recordings. Space Art’s Trip To The Center Head, a 1978 progressive electronic odyssey, is a nice supplement to the Onyx album released digitally last year on Anthology. This release captures nicely an era in European music transitioning from prog and kraut rock to early techno and electronica.
From Cherry Red this week we have another excellent Felt record, this time a double album entitled The Strange Idols Pattern And Other Short Stories / Ignite The Seven Cannons, two albums both capturing this 80s alternative UK band in their prime…and featuring guest vocals from Cocteau Twins member Elizabeth Fraser.
From Fledg’ling we have Very Urgent by The Chris Macgregor Group, an album of long, structurally diverse jazz tracks with exceptional horn arrangements.
We’ve got many new Gear Fab titles this week; Bill Sissett And Th Mandan Massacre Awake In Th Red Desert--one of the most amazingly bizarre albums we’ve yet to cross paths with, Magic’s “Enclosed”--a Motown Record deal-gone-bad band that fused rock, funk, and soul (appropriate coming from Detroit), Cykle Cykle Featuring The Young Ones--a 60’s pop group that changed names several times, Witch Burning by Salem Mass—an appropriate album title for this psych band from Idaho and “Overdose” by Lumbee—a well done combination of funk, psych, and chugging guitar rock.
Guerssen Records Brings some fantastic reissues to Anthology this week; Dave Bixby’s Ode to Quetzalcoatl, a reissue of one of the most heavily sought after acid-folk records from the late 60s, and Harbinger’s Second Coming album—a followup private-pressing album by Dave Bixby and others in the early 70s that was virtually unknown to exist until recently. Killer album!
From Lrc/Groove Merchants we’ve got 900 Shares Of The Blues by Mike Longo—a nice fusion album with the legendary Ron Carter on bass, and Main Squeeze by Jimmy McGriff—a 1974 release by this well-known organ master.
Sunny Side brings to Anthology another astonishing reggae album by late great Serge Gainsbourg. Mauvaises Nouvelles Des Etoiles features the original tracks, dubs, and remixes… all done in the classic roots reggae production style.

Lloyd—a 1956 album originally on US label Riverside, Ramblin Jack by Jack Elliot—Woody Guthrie's most famous sidekick and early influence on Bob Dylan, Rags, Reels & Airs by Dave Swarbrick—British folk multi-instrumentalist who features Martin Carthy on this highly collectable LP, and Ashes And Diamonds by June Tabor—reissued from the 1989 LP of this high-acclaimed British songwriter and vocalist.

Hello folks!
Greetings from Anthology. We've got yet another slew of amazing reissues and rarities for you this week--read on for a full list and details...
From Attack Records we have a dub album by legendary group The Aggrovators entitled Kaya Dub. Most will recognize these tracks as coming from the Bob Marley repertoire, this time though classic Marley tunes such as "Natural Mystic" and "Small Axe" are reworked in the heavy, smokey dub instrumental style of The Aggrovators. Another excellent reggae release is from Ken Boothe. You're No Good compiles his classic roots tracks such as "Puppet on a String", and lesser-knowns from the man they call the "Voice of Choice."
New this week from Cherry Red is a Kevin Coyne double album entitled Pointing The Finger / Politicz - The Cherry Red Albums 1981-1982--a collection of works from 2 albums recorded only a year away from one another; but as you'll hear, the diversity between each album (never mind between tracks) is staggering--certainly what's to be expected from this notorious outsider of pop song writing. Also, we've got another great Felt record out this week. The Pictorial Jackson Review, yet another catchy record from a bottomless catalog, is fantastic pop reminiscent of The Feelies.
Elesion Fields bring us Terry Riley's The Last Camel In Paris, a composition spanning 54 minutes in length-- an interesting departure from his better known minimalist works, as this explores more deliberate shifts in melody and instrumentation.
Gear Fab records reissues The Bachs digitally this week with Anthology. Out Of The Bachs considered by many as one of the most desirable and collectable garage LP's (sightings of this original pressing on ebay for thousands of dollars!) is a pop treat--all original compositions, raw, fun and catchy tracks--definitely an album to put on repeat for that summer road trip (I know I will).
Spanish label Guerssen Records releases two gorgeous albums this week by Pererin, a Welsh group who interpreted traditional native folk songs with their own prog sound and unique instrumentation. Teithgan and Tirion Dir each have their own special feel, definitely an interesting contrast in approaches to psychedelic folk. Also from Guerssen we have Alan Munson's solo album entitled Good Morning World, an excellent followup album for anyone as obsessed with the Cooley-Munson record as we are!
From Ikef this week we have a very unique Sun Ra reissue in collaboration with influential activist and poet Henry Dumas--The Ark And The Ankh is a 1966 recording of dialogues and meditations between the two visionaries set to the Arkestra's experimentations at the Slug's Saloon in NYC.
From David Byrne's excellent label Luaka Bop label we have a Tom Zé collection entitled >Brazil Classics 4: The Best Of Tom Zé, an excellent introduction into the world of this incredibly prolific Brazilian musician who built on the traditional rhythms of his native music to concoct experimental and politically charged music.
New this week from RetroAfric is Yaba Funk Roots by Captain Yaba, an African vocalist and koliko (traditional African banjo) player, an album fusing African rhythms with jazz, funk, and dance.
That's about it for this week.. hope you enjoy our new releases as well as the informative article on Alan Watts that just went up, and we'll see ya next week!

Hello Folks!
Just a quick update on this week’s releases from Anthology— got a great lineup of titles including roots reggae, rare No-Wave recordings, 60s experimental, obscure garage pop and more…
From Locust Music we have another Henry Flynt title, this time a 1966 recording with his basement rock protest band The Insurrections entitled I Don’t Wanna— a recording of energized rock improv weirdness featuring legendary sculptor Walter De Maria on drums.
Decapo Records brings to Anthology one of the most important compositions in modern music: Terry Riley’s – In C. This 1964 recording of Terry’s work, a fluid scape of interlocking repetitive patterns, is THE definitive, essential work that shaped minimalism in its formative years.
An exceptional compilation from Orange Mountain Music was released this week: various experimental works from the 80s downtown NY scene - From The Kitchen Archives: Amplified - New Music Meets Rock, 1981-1986 compiles tracks restored from original audio reels archiving performances at The Kitchen, the leading center for contemporary arts in NY. For fans seeking rare live recordings – this one has unreleased material by Sonic Youth, Swans, Arthur Russell, Elliot Sharp, and several others.
New Albion Records offers a gorgeous Morton Feldman album: Only was performed originally under unique, and rather poetic circumstances by Joan La Barbara. Here’s an excerpt Joan’s notes: I sang it for the first time on June 23, from the roof of the State Opera House on the Leidseplein, at midnight, in the rain. I am sure only the angels heard it... and, perhaps, Morty.
From Azra Music this week we have a classic Barrington Levy album. Bounty Hunter - Place Too Dark features many of his earliest singles— an exceptional roots reggae release from Kingston’s “Mellow Canary.”
Ikef Records, a label specializing in avant jazz, spoken word, beat poetry, and the 60s black arts movement releases K. Curtis Lyle’s The Collected Poems of Blind Lemon Jefferson— an experimental take on the Blues Mythos featuring Julius Hemphill on saxophone.
Three great releases from Gear Fab Records this week: After All’s self-titled release— a psych rock quartet from Florida who strived to release a “concept” album that blended their influences of acid rock, classic rock and even surrealism—this idea coheres nicely with the poetic writings of Linda Hargrove, which were the source of the album’s lyrics. Bittervetch Master & Demos is also a good one! AKA The Chandells, Bittervetch made a decent name for themselves in their hometown of Cincinnati. This early basement recording serves as perfect listening for fans of catchy garage pop. And finally, we have Connecticut’s American Blues Exchange Blue Print album, a fuzzy garage blues LP featuring rare live tracks as a bonus.
That’s about it for this week. Hope you enjoy our new releases, and stay tuned for more to come!

Greetings from Anthology!
Another fantastic week of releases—and just in time to accompany the incredible spring weather that's finally begun to sprout. We've got some exclusive Latin music from the legendary Peruvian MAG Studios, dance remixes of classic R&B tracks, psychedelic minimalism of Terry Riley, NY native Gandalf the Grey, ultra-rare French lo-fi psych band Warlus, and much more. Read on for more details....
Anthology Recordings in collaboration with Repsychled Records has released the first of a series of exclusive compilations of extremely rare Latin Music from Peru's legendary MAG Studios—Mag All Stars: Volume 1 Mambos, Guarachas, Descargas, Cumbias is taken from the original master tapes and includes songs from Lucho Macedo, Tito Chicoma, Betico Salas, Carlos Pickling, and others.
One of the many Gear Fab highlight artists Gandalf the Grey has a new one up this week. The Grey Wizard Am I is a psych gem written, performed, produced, and self-released by Long Island resident Chris Wilson, the Wizard himself. Following the release of Experiment in Metaphysics, Perry Leopold's Christian Lucifer is yet another gorgeous release in the acid-folk realm, this time with accompaniment by more elaborate instrumentation. And finally, Gear Fab releases Bokaj Retsiem's Psychedelic Underground—an amazing heavy psych record (with the best album art we've ever seen!).
The Guerssen Records reissue of Warlus's Songs LP has been released this week, considered to be one of the most obscure private pressings to emerge from the French psych scene. Druggy lo-fi production and an overall charming strangeness combined with catchy pop meanderings... this one is a must listen for anyone into unconventional pop.
From Traffic Entertainment this week we have Donna Mcghee's Make It Last Forever reissue—a lesser known soulful and sexy disco album that ranks up there with Donna Summers and other disco greats in terms of quality, Sounds of NY, USA: Volume 1—a collection of rare hip-hop 12" from groups such as Scoopy, Teen Machine, and Universal Two, P & P Funk a collection of funk treasures and rare grooves from this Harlem based label.
New from Sunny Side Records is Charles Mingus's Live at UCLA, 1965 recording—a stunning archive of his ensemble's performance at the Monterey Jazz Festival. From Elision Fields Records we have our second release from Terry Riley—Reed Streams is a self-recorded organ performance on reel to reel machines as well as a thirty minute big band interpretation of “In C” (two years before his seminal In C album was released). From Cherry Red we’ve got heavy blues-rock band Stack Waddy with their Bugger Off! album—a group signed to John Peel's Dandelion label.
Lovely Music brings a diverse group of releases to Anthology this week; Jon Hassell's Vernal Equinox—a beautiful piece composed of effected trumpet, ethnic percussion and drone, Jacqueline Humbert's Chanteuse and Meredith Monk's Key albums, both unique experimental performance albums delving into the poetics of speech, and Robert Ashley's Automatic Writing—a collection featuring the title track and other pieces from this leading figure in American academic composition.
From Topic Records this week we have the legendary British folk guitarist Martin McCarthy with two releases—a self titled album with Dave Swarbrick on fiddle, and Byker Hill released a few years after in 1967 and also featuring Swarbrick's contributions. Attack Records brings us another excellent roots reggae album from I-Roy entitled Original Deejay at King Tubby's Studio. Last but not least, West End Records artist Larry Levan's Remixes Made Famous At The Paradise Garage is available this week, yet another funky classic for the upcoming warm weather (look out for all the hip-hop samples in this one!).
That's it for this now... stay tuned for more rarities and obscurities next week!

Hello folks!
This week’s lineup of releases is a special one. For starters, Anthology announces its release of the Househunters Feeding Frenzy album, available digitally for the first time ever. For those who don’t know about the Headhunters, they’re an incredible post-punk band from London featuring Jowe Head—who was a contributing member of Swell Maps and the Television Personalities. Although they combined electronics, punk, and at times new-wave influenced production, their music is too great to be described. Check em’ out for yourself!
From Ork record is The Babys Unofficial Babys Album, a long lost power pop album produced by Adrian Millar and featuring the first recordings of US solo pop star John Waite, also lead vocalist for Bad English. If you’re into heavy blues riffs and catchy 70’s pop anthems, this one’s for you.
We’ve got several releases this week from psych/garage reissue label Gear Fab records (and many more to come!), including Baltimore’s mind-blowing Maypole with an album called The Real, a self-titled album by Christopher—a Houston based band with Cream era Clapton-influenced vocals (in a good way), The Children’s Rebirth—a garage pop group from San Antonio, and legendary psych multi-talent Big Boy Pete with his genius Marcetson Demos reissue.
New from Retroafric this week are two releases by “The King of High Life” E.T. Mensah. The first, entitled Day By Day, features the hit title track as well as a collection of songs that perfectly capture the development of Tempos' sound, E.T’s backing band. All For You is similar in collecting some his finest works, including one of his first 78s with a track called “Nkebo Baaya.”
From Unseen worlds this week is a reissue by “Blue” Gene Tyranny, entitled Out Of The Blue. Blue is a Grammy-nominated composer and pianist who’s performed on records by Robert Ashley, John Cage, and Laurie Anderson among others. This one features him on Polymoog and RMI synthesizers leading a chamber rock ensemble.
That’s about it for now. Have a great weekend and look out for more reissues and rarities next week…

Hi Folks!
Got some excellent releases for you this week, but first – we’d like to announce that the new Plastic Crimewave podcast is up and available for free download! This one’s a sizzler, a mix of extremely rare proto-punk, some of which you’ll never hear anywhere else for sure… so enjoy! Also, we’ve begun working with the NYC-based label Tompkins Square Records, a fantastic label that releases folk, psychedelic and roots music—specifically in the acoustic guitar realm. Peter Walker’s never before released collection of self-recorded gems entitled Long Lost Tapes – 1970 is now available digitally for the first time ever with Anthology Recordings!
We’ve also begun working with another fantastic label—Unseen Worlds. These folks release avant garde and experimental music from minimalism to academic composition. Read on for more info on releases from these great labels and several others…
New from Sunnyside records this week is Brazilian jazz legend Luiz Bonfa’s Le Roi De LA, a reissue combining 2 LPs together for an excellent Bossa Nova collection. Repsychled Records bring to us Volume 1 - King on Mambos, Descargas, Guarachas & Cumbias by the MAG recording artists La Sonora De Lucho Machedo, a collection of the finest works in Latin rhythms and big band Latin jazz.
Traffic Entertainment’s excellent reissues of old school hip-hop and dance make their way to our new releases. A compilation entitled The Best of Old School: Enjoy Records compiles classic tracks by Grandmaster Flash alongside lesser-known but equally important classic rap acts, MC Shan’s Down by Law with extra tracks previously unavailable, and Arrival by Cymande – a amalgam of heavy rhythms, dance, afro-beat, Calypso and more.
Another excellent Locust Music album is available; this week is Purified By The Fire by Henry Flynt, a 41 minute hypnotic and psychedelic drone-blues meditation performed by Henry on electric violin and C.C. Hennix playing the Pandit Pran Nath tambura.
The first Anthology releases to come from the Unseen Worlds label are certainly impressive ones—Carl Stone’s Woo Lae Oak is a gorgeous drone piece utilizing classic tape techniques, while Elodie Lauten’s The Death of Don Juan uses operatic vocal approaches (most notably vocal and instrumental contributions by Arthur Russell), and Lubomyr Melnyk’s KMH is an organic piano work inspired by the greats of minimalism, in particular Erik Satie.
The mysterious Sibylle Baier album Colour Green, a heart-wrenching guitar masterwork released through Orange Mountain Records, is now up on the Anthology site for download.
New this week from Elesion Fields is the Terry Riley album Music for the Gift; considered by some to be the precursor to the landmark minimalism piece In C. Cherry Red brings R.Stevie Moore’s Meet the R.Stevie Moore collection, a “best-of” of sorts from an underground legend of bizarre and quirky pop song-writing.
LRC Ltd. bring us two fantastic releases by funky organist Jimmy McGriff, Giants of the Organ Come Together and Groove Grease.” Guerssen Records—this week’s featured label—brings us some great folk, psych, and pop reissues including Todos Rien De Mi by Agemenon, Path Through The Forest by The Factory, and Haul Ar Yr Eira by Pererin.
That's all for this week. Have a great weekend and stay tuned for more great reissues and rarities!

Hi Folks!
Here’s a quick list of out new releases and reissues for the week’s end:
The Dead C., New Zealand’s most notorious noise/punk/art outfit, is now available.“Vain, Erudite and Stupid: Selected Works 1987-2005”, originally on Ba Da Bing! Records, captures their finest moments from personal band favorites to never before heard tapes.
Busy Bee’s “Runnin Thangs”, a Traffic Entertainment release, came out originally in 1988. "Runnin Thangs" features production by Jazzy Jay and, of course, Busy Bee’s often humorous lyrics.
Cuneiform Records bring us a collection from Birdsongs of the Mesozoic entitled “Dawn of the Cycads” originally a multi-disc collection of LP’s, live recordings, and rare unreleased recordings from this art-rock ensemble from the early to mid 80’s. Mission of Burma’s Roger Miller contributes to this group significantly with his conceptual approaches to bridge experimental music with rock song forms.
Gear Fab Records unveils one of their many mysterious 60’s reissues digitally with us this week: this time by the Canadian group “Blues Train.” Literally no musicians are identified on this one- certainly an interesting example of blues-rock by, quite literally, an unknown band.
Guerssen Records offers another fantastic reissue of rare psych-rock. Bogotá, Colombia brought Los Flippers’ into the South American psych-rock scene in the early 70’s. “Pronto Viviremos Un Mundo Mucho Mejor”, a less successful release by them is definitely no less amazing an album though.
Ramon Sender’s “Worldfood” a Locust records release, is an extremely psychedelic drone piece, utilizing tape loops and other electronics to build a wall of hazy, hypnotic repetitions- a great example of the adventurous sounds to come from San Francisco’s Bay Area scene and the San Francisco Tape Center in the 1960’s.
Johnny Clarke “ Be Thankful”, an Attack records reissue, is a perfect 1970’s roots album, with bonus dub versions of all the tracks as well. Full of hard rhythms (some of which are courtesy of King Tubby), classic dub production, and Clarke’s signature vocals tying it all together, “Be Thankful” is the perfect headphone companion for the warmer weather on its way.
That’s it for this week. Stay tuned for more great releases after the weekend…

Hi Folks!
Got some excellent releases for you this week, but first – we’d like to thank everyone who made it out to our Sunday Salons event at the Palihouse LA last weekend. Check out the after-party report in the news section for details and photos. As we continue to only scratch the surface of the Gear Fab catalog as well as Repsychled among other great labels, be assured this week’s releases delve into a wide spectrum of genres and sounds. Read on for more info…
Pau Riba’s “Pau Riba / Pau I Jordi”, a gorgeous blend of Catalan folk inspired psych-pop, is now available for the first time ever digitally on Anthology Recordings. From Guerssen Records we’ve got Alan Munson’s “First Light”,serving as a fantastic followup release to the Cooly-Munson collaboration that came out a few weeks back. Legendary Brazilian guitarist Baden Powell’s “Le Monde Musical de Baden Powell” is a beautiful Sunnyside Records reissue for fans of Luiz Bonfa, Bola Sete, and even Andres Segovia. A live recording of Cabaret Voltaire,“Live at the Hacienda” captures their 1983 and 1986 live performances—a fantastic recording of true industrial music.
New from Repsychled records this week is Grupo Amigos’ “Paloma Mensajera”, a self-titled album by Nil’s Jazz Ensemble, as well as two incredible albums from Traffic Sound: “Virgin” and their self-titled LP- exceptional psych reissues from South America. This week from Gear Fab is a special one: the self-titled album by Horses, a late 60’s Cali psych pop band led by front man Don Johnson (yes, from Miami Vice).
Some great dub reggae from Mikey Dread makes its way into the reissues this week: his ”African Anthem” album upholds Mikey’s reputation as one of the best dub producers from the roots era for sure. A nice companion to that is Serge Gainsbourg’s “Aux Armes Et Caetera”, a Sunnyside reissue of Serge’s unique wanderings into dub reggae production.
Lastly, is an excellent hip-hop album by Ultimate Force entitled “I’m Not Playin”, a release that should have come out in the early 90’s, but a shame it never did! This one’s produced by the legendary Diamond D. (D.I.T.C) and features guest vocals by Fat Joe!
That’s all for now … stay tuned for more next week!

Hello folks… hope your Presidents' Day was a good one! This week brings some highly anticipated digital releases to the Anthology catalog, including the South American heavy psych-rock of Telegraph Avenue, the wistful pop melodies of Tony, Caro and John, and the lush textural compositions of Richard Pinhas & Merzbow.
Repsychled Records’ offerings for this week include Telegraph Avenue’s second album Volume 2, a highly addictive listen with heavy, but extremely catchy tunes like “Tookie Tookie”.
Gear Fab Records digs up more rare psych and garage, this week with the Psychedelic States–Colorado compilation, Big Lost Rainbow’s organic and jazzy self-titled release, Ernie Fischbach and Charles Ewing’s ethnic psych masterwork A Cid Symphony, and a charming fuzzy blues rock album entitled Limited Edition by Blue Max.
Cherry Red records artist Marine Girls is now available digitally with Anthology! Lazy Ways / Beach Party combines two fantastic releases from one UK’s most influential 80’s indie-pop outfits.
Tony, Caro and John’s All On The First Day, originally an extremely limited private-pressing, is out this week—certainly one of the most anticipated acid-folk reissues of the year for sure.
Guerssen Records offers us the Tree People, a self-titled release of moody, dreamy guitar folk led by Stephen Cohen’s soulful vocals. Also, Bill Quick’s Maravillosa Gente, an eclectic amalgam of addictive pop anthems and introspective folk melodies, is now available featuring the infectious songs “Take Me Away” and “Beautiful People”.
New from Cuneiform Records this week is Golden Section by Isotope, an epic progressive rock-jazz group with an original line-up containing Soft-Machine’s bassist Hugh Hopper, and Keio Line by Richard Pinhas & Merzbow—a more recent recording that harnesses noise, distorted harmonies and focused attacks of sonic texture.

Hello folks! This week Anthology delves into several eclectic music genres in addition to our popular psych and folk reissues including experimental, post-punk, hip-hop, and more. From Long Island’s JVC Force to London’s Wasted Youth—we’ve found something interesting from just about every corner of the globe.
Edgar Breau, guitarist from Canadian psych-punk band Simply Saucer, has finally released his “Shadows Of Ecstasy” solo album for the first time… with Anthology! Edgar’s shift from the fuzzed out world of Simply Saucer to folk and roots music is perfected here for the first time as a fully realized album.
B-Boy Records, a label known for its contribution to hip-hop’s golden era with artists such as Boogie Down Productions, released JVC Force’s “Doin Damage” 1988. Now available on MP3, we recommend checking this old school gem out. For many, this album is crucial to any hip-hop fan’s collection—once you hear the irresistible hook in the title track, you’ll certainly agree.
The Watts Prophets “Things Gonna Get Greater” collection, reissued on CD by Water Records, is now available here. A collection of spoken word, jazz-influenced musical backing, and pre hip-hop poetics, this lengthy collection accounts for one of the most politically charged groups to emerge from the black rights movement.
“In Debt”, a serious collectable, private pressed LP by Cooley-Munson is finally available for download. A combination of low-fi production, and quirky psychedelic folk-rock, this extremely catchy album deserves every bit of hype it continues to receive.
We’ve unleashed yet another fantastic Gear Fab release, this time by Collage—a Texan group known for their exotic take on pop standards. Their Latin version of “Day Tripper” is reminiscent of Sergio Mendes arrangements, but certainly remains a unique version all its own (it helps to have identical twins harmonizing on vocals)!
Cornelius Cardew’s “Four Principles On Ireland And Other Pieces”, originally released on Cramps records and later reissued by Ampersand, is Cardew’s interesting study of melody through solo piano works. For those familiar with Cardew’s avant-garde leanings, “Four Principles” is a great introduction to his later work that utilized his “New Tonality” approach.
“Memorialize”, a singles collection by Wasted Youth, is a fantastic featured album of the week. The singles were first released first on Bridge House, and showcase this band’s innate skill to combine their punk, new wave, psychedelic and goth influences.

Second Sundays After-Party Report
by stormchild
It has been a good couple of weeks for all of us, here at Anthology, to ruminate on our first-ever Second Sunday party at the Palihouse Holloway hotel in Los Angeles, California. And in our opinion...it was a rousing success! We managed to get some video and pics from the event and they can both be found here, respectively: videothing and flickr.

Some new records & a press update
by stormchild
Hey All,
Just posted a new update with some really excellent records. Both the Reign Ghost and the Mark Fry records are real stunners. Both will appeal to you if you dig Folk music with a dash of psychedelia (the Reign Ghost album has a bit more fuzz). We also have three 7 inches available from Rochester based New Wave/Power Pop group, New Math - really cool stuff.
The two remaining are also worth your time - The Bread, Love & Dreams album is a very rare Progressive 'Acid Folk' album originally released in 71' on Decca and reissued by our friends at Sunbeam. After that, another edition to the growing Cuneiform catalog with New York's heavy & experimental, Doctor Nerve.
You can link to all of these records above!
Also, we're putting up a ton of new press in our press section today, which can be linked to through the 'About' link up top. Just in case you want to read up...

New Music!
by Stormchild
6 new albums available today – enjoy!
Ron Matelic – Never before released recordings from Anonymous/J.Rider front man Ron Matelic! Mostly recorded between 1998 & 2001 – some of this stuff ranks up there with the best of both Matelic’s prior projects – Amazing, Jangly, Psychedelic-Pop.
The Damnation Of Adam Blessing – DOAB’s first two albums are now available here! Cleveland’s own DOAB are truly one of the overlooked bands of the late 60’s/early 70’s and evaded many of the pitfalls of the times by creating truly innovative and memorable Hard Rock. Both are absolute essentials for any fan of the genre.
Tony Allen – Probably best known as Fela Kuti’s drummer and music director of Kuti’s band, Afrika 70 who created the sound that came to be known as ‘Afro-Beat’. This is a complete Anthology of Tony’s first albums: Jealousy (’75), Progress (’76), No Accomodation for Lagos (’78) and No Discrimination (’79).
Jukka Tolonen – The first solo outing from pioneering Finnish guitarist, Jukka Tolonen. A frequent collaborator with Wigwam and Pekka Streng, Jukka was known as the most innovative player in Finland (and even won their prestigious Georgie award for “Jazz musician of the year” in 1974.
Satwa - Reissue of the first ever private press LP from Brazil. Recorded and released in 1973 by the duo of Lula Cortes & Lailson. A real lost masterpiece from any angel, and the first release of the fertile Recife psych scene of the early 70's... mesmerizingly beautiful sitar & 12 string psych ragas beaming strait for your third eye, and lifted ever higher by occasional angelic vocals or a burst of fuzz guitar...truly amazing stuff sure to turn the ears of any folk/psych fan, past or present...

New Releases 8/20
by Stormchild
First up is Catalan singer/songwriter Pau Riba's psych/folk masterpiece, ' Jo, La Donya I EL Gripau'. Recorded in seclusion on the island of Formentera 'Jo, La Donya..' is a concept album about Riba's first born son coming into the world. Originally released on the Spanish Nuevos Medios label in 1971 the album is almost entirely acoustic and features recordings of nature interspersed with wonderfully upbeat songs that bring to mind the finer moments of The Incredible String Band or at times the spirit of the Tropicalia movement (Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil etc). This is the first in a series of reissues we will be doing of Pau Riba's early work. Next up is Riba's debut double album 'Diotriopa I & II' which will be released in conjunction with a full article/interview in the new extended editorials section of our website. ...more on that below.
Although the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and Moby Grape helped define the San Francisco scene in the 60s, there was one band that was the catalyst for it. The Charlatans are unsung heroes of the era -- a band that not only have been credited with starting the Haight/Ashbury Psych scene, but are also the originators of the 'San Francisco sound'. Born out of the ashes of the SF Folk/Jug-band scene, the band formed in 1964 and began making a name for themselves. The group was started by George Hunter and Richard Olsen and also featured Dan Hicks (later of Hot Licks fame), Michael Ferguson and Mike Wilhelm. The bands 1965 residency at the Red Dog Saloon is cited to be the legendary and inspiring stint that helped the stylistic shift on the scene. Two key things are said to have happened during that residency - the band took LSD (not yet the norm), which fueled several of the performances and also created psychedelic poster art to promote the performances (the artwork was later aped by the Filmore in 1966 to promote their gigs).
Although they recorded and released a single following their stand at the Red Dog, the band went through some line up changes and did not manage to release a proper album until 1969. By this time, the backlash against SF psych bands and the hippie scene was strong and the album would not stand a chance. However, the mark they left remains intact and Anthology is incredibly proud to make this collection of music available digitally for the first time.
Yet another new collaboration that we are quite excited about... South American Psych connoisseurs take note, Re-psych-led has been collecting some of the finest moments in Peruvian Psychedelia for a little while now and this is the first of their titles that we will be making available digitally. If you already know about Laghonia and their albums: "Glue" & "Etcetera" ( 1971 ), you probably wonder what exactly this release is. It is a dream made true. 54 minutes of unprecedented music recorded between 1967 and 1970, plus two unreleased tracks from the rehearsals sessions of their first album. The song "Confusion in the Street" was recorded in concert. If you collect South American psychedelic music or are starting to get involved with this kind of music, you should know this unique Peruvian band, one of the few in South America that used Hammond B2 organ in the studio and live performances. This band played only original compositions influenced by The Beatles, The Kinks, The Yardbirds, Cream and many others. Their first album is one of the best rock albums in South America. Now, you can listen to what came before.
Once upon a time, when the music business was more music than business (but only just), there was a band called Odyssey that created a quintessential dose of New York sixties psychedelia -- strong harmonic vocals, heavy swirling organ, and fuzz guitar riffs of the greatest ferocity. Their lone album, Setting Forth, one of the ten rarest and most sought after US psychedelic albums, is now available digitally. This is truly one of the cornerstones of underground psychedelic music, recorded in 1969, released in an edition of fewer than 100 copies, and impossible to find as it only came in a plain white cardboard sleeve. Enjoy!!
Classical M could have made a great album if given the chance. As it is, the songs contained on Bad Guys (taken from several 45's as well as a bunch of unreleased tracks) make for a stunning collection, with the band's psychedelic flourishes, outrageous melodies, and fantastic attention to production detail evident throughout. This profoundly original music was made in three short years (1967-1970): twenty-four delirious and provocative songs that establish Classical M as perhaps the best, and certainly the most intriguing French band of all time. Their offbeat sense of rhythm and harmony, the complex intertwining of voices, and perhaps more than anything, their unusual practice of trying to play all sorts of instruments--be they electronic or traditional--these elements make the music of this odd French trio unique and very special. We are proud to make this music available to the world.
Terry Manning's 'Home Sweet Home' is best known as the recording debut of Big Star's Chris Bell. This outrageously enjoyable blend of psychedelic rock, Memphis soul and dirty R&B kicks off with one of the most audacious and successful Beatles covers ever. A feast of fuzz guitar, sweet vocals and funky rhythms, Home Sweet Home is a tongue-in-cheek blast from start to finish, and guaranteed to delight fans of power pop worldwide.

New Releases 6/7
by stormchild
Greetings all - we are very pleased to bring you a diverse selection of new titles to ease your way from Spring into Summer. A bit of UK folk, some Soul/Jazz, some classic Hardcore Punk, some spacey lounge oddities, a bit of Proto-Punk and some wonderfully psychedelic pop songs just to bring it all back home. So whatever your fancy when it comes to rare, undiscovered or under-appreciated gems we've probably got just the thing you didn't know you were looking for...
First up, we have Oneness of Juju's second (and yes, classic) album, "Space Jungle Luv". Released in 1976 (one year after the acclaimed "African Rhythms"), the album is a mixture of Soul, Free Jazz & Funk. Led by legendary saxophonist, J. Plunky Branch, the Space Jungle Luv set is a more atmospheric affair than the aforementioned African Rhythms and has the band venturing into more R&B infused jams while also adding vocalist Jacqueline Holman (aka Lady Eka-Ete).
Next up we have the space lounge oddities of one Attileo "Art" Mineo. "Man In Space With Sounds" is one of those legendary LPs many have heard about but few have ever actually heard or seen. A rare souvenir of the 1962 Seattle World's Fair, this music served as the soundtrack to a ride called the Bubbleator, which transported fair visitors through an overview of the future, a technological utopia where science and space travel promised solutions to all of humanity's plights. Needless to say, that future never arrived and this music (actually recorded in the early 1950s) still sounds as futuristic today as it must have back then. This release has two different versions of the original album, one with sprightly introductory voice-overs for each song, and the other solely instrumental. The all-original compositions fall somewhere between nervous Philip Glass and 1950s sci-fi movie music, arranged with string orchestra in a sometimes rhythmic, polyrhythmic, or merely ambient cloud of odd electronic space noises. A unique document of this under appreciated composer and arranger.
We're gonna go back in time when a hairy young Briton was sleeping off a hangover called the 60's, a time unsure of directon for the coming decade. With it's stash all spent a generation was resting it's head, but not everyone had gone to bed. Three wild kids have stayed up to smash all the rules and rock-out. Deep underground could be heard a rumble - the Proto-punk throb of Crushed Butler. Playing prestigious gigs with the likes of Atomic Rooster, Third World War, Mott The Hoople, Osibisa and Kevin Ayers; Crushed Butler routinely blew the headlining act off the stage with their ferocious brand of hooligan rock and were described by one contemporary reviewer as being "three ugly, heavy musicians, making music to match. Often referred to as the first British Punk band 'Uncrushed' is a collection of recordings from their brief existance from 1969-71.
You may remember our release of Wizz Jone's essential album 'The Legendary Me' from a few months back. Well here is a second installment of Folk jams from the UK guitarist/singer, Lazy Farmer. This 1975 ultra-rarity was originally released only in Germany. Featuring guitar legend Wizz Jones as well as ex-COB member John Bidwell and multi-instrumentalist Jake Walton, it's a haunting collection of beautifully-arranged folk standards, along with a handful of glorious cover versions. This reissue has been produced with the full collaboration of the band - and, as originals are now highly sought-after, it's a chance to hear the album without paying hundreds of dollars! Comprehensive liner notes are available with the full album download.
Way ahead of its time, the Free Spirits' radical 1967 album has been a missing link in the combination of Rock & Jazz until fairly recently. Featuring the young Larry Coryell, who made his recording debut here, the band was only together briefly but dazzled all who heard them (including Jimi Hendrix, the Doors and the Velvet Underground) with their revolutionary brand of psychedelic jazz-rock. Produced with the band's full involvement, this package comes complete with a rare non-LP bonus track, previously unseen photos and detailed liner notes by Richie Unterberger available with full album download.
In the last newsletter, we mentioned a new collaboration with New Jersey Hardcore label Mad At The World records. The first in a set of releases with them is the classic sole EP by the enigmatic Queens band Urban Waste. Roger of Agnostic Front has said "they're the band that got me into hardcore!" Urban Waste was part of the New York renaissance of hardcore punk in the early 1980's. Much more raw, visceral, and overtly confrontational than their New York punk predecessors, these boys were contemporaries to Reagan Youth (bass player Andy Apathy was an early member), the earliest incarnation of the Beastie Boys, and the Bad Brains. This is a re-issue of the sole EP by one of the most sought after and enigmatic bands from the earliest days of New York hardcore.
Another early Hardcore classic from our friends at Mad At The World Records, The Nihilistics self titled debut album was originally released in 1983 and has never been available in any digital format before. The Nihilistics hailed from Long Island, but gigged around Manhatten in clubs like A7, CBGB's and the Mudd Club, and appeared on the legendary New York Thrash compilation with THE BEASTIE BOYS, THE MAD, and THE BAD BRAINS. Through their wild live shows, they developed a reputation as one of the most damaged and misanthropic bands in New York City.
Recorded in 1977 as a set of demos and never properly released at the time, J. Rider was Anonymous main man Ron Matelic's post Anonymous Band formed mainly to perform his songs live. They made one set of recordings appropriately titled 'No Longer Anonymous' which untill fairly recently sat quietly in his vaults and became the stuff of legends. While J. Rider uses a similar blend of upbeat westcoast style rock to his previous project 'No Longer Anonymous' differs mainly in the production style which is a slicker, more refined take on the bands sound, but still remains an essential piece. Frontman and chief songwriter, Ron Matelic, is still at the top of his game, delivering excellent songwriting in the vein of The Byrds and CSNY.
And here's a brief update on what you can expect in the near future:
We've got some amazing Turkish Psych from Ayet Aydin's grup Bunalim. You may have gotten a taste of these guys from the recent Shadoks CD reissue, but here we're making it available digitally for the first time. Since Bunalim only released a handful of singles, this release was extremely welcome. Hailed as one of the great Turkish acts of it's time, members of the band went on to work with luminaries such as Erkin Koray, Mogollar, Ter & Edip Akbayram. Great stuff!
We'll also be offering up a round of releases from the legendary Finnish label, Love Records. There will be five total - Mummi Kutoo, Wigwam's "Being", Piirpauke 2, Pekka Pohjola's "Pihkasilmä Kaamakorva" & Jukka Tolonen's "Tolonen!" - say that five times fast! We'll have more info on all of these great records in the next newsletter.
Please stay tuned for more news, and as always, thank you for your support.

Anthology Recordings and digital age diggin’
by stormchild
One of my favorite new record labels, Anthology Recordings is a bit of a contradiction at first glance. It issues obscure albums, lost tapes and unreleased sessions by long-gone artists and bands, usually in the noise, psychedelia, punk, folk, instrumental soul-funk and early electronic genres. The thing is, the label is all about the very current phenomenon, the digital download, so the reissues are not available on CD, just through the label’s online shop, usually exclusively...

Name-checked in the now legendary Nurse With Wound list and originally released in 1976, this one of a kind Dada/Punk/Psych masterpiece from Chickasha, Oklahoma is a must for fans of raw, twisted and beautiful pre-Punk Psychedelia. Influenced by bands such as Captain Beefheart, The Stooges and early Roxy Music, but more akin to contemporaries such as Hearthan-era Pere Ubu, Siren-era Chrome, Indiana-era MX-80 Sound and Canadian miscreants Simply Saucer, Debris' sole LP is a slice of truly mind altering sonic mayhem. Includes all eleven songs from the original LP culled from the original master tapes, plus rare photos and extensive biography by three of the bands original members.
Another overlooked gem. Mournin' by Germany's Night Sun could very well be one of the heaviest records of all time! Often compared to Deep Purple or even Sabbath, but even more over the top, Mournin' is a one off album released in 1972 and then barely heard from again.
After celebrated 60's rockers The Action dissolved, some of the remaining members went on to form the more Psych/Folk oriented Mighty Baby. Their second and final album 'Jug of Love' originally appeared in 1971, and has gone on to become one of the best-loved underground recordings of its time. Produced by Mike Vernon (David Bowie, Fleetwood Mac, Ten Years After), it's an uplifting collection of Folk and Country-influenced jams that showcases the band's fluid, expressive musicianship and the astonishing guitar playing of Martin Stone. This long-awaited official reissue has been assembled with their full involvement, and comes complete with rare photographs, full liner notes and four ultra-rare bonus tracks, making it an essential purchase for lovers of 'Acid Folk' and Psychedelia.
For fans of Parson Sound (or any other related jams - Harvester, International Harvester, etc) we have some of the best ever live recordings (and that's how this band should be heard) from the legendary post Parson Sound band Träd Gräs Och Stenar (Trees Grass & Stones) recorded at the first ever Swedish out doors summer hippie festival in Sweden 1970. The sound is just amazing: a stoned lysergic wall of acid guitars jamming away and never letting up, pounding bass , furious drums and mystical howling vocals . A true landmark in Psychedelic/Progressive history.
Bobby BeauSoleil's soundtrack for Kenneth Anger's legendary film Lucifer Rising has arrived, and it is everything you hoped it would be! Recorded quite literally behind bars in Californias Tracy State prison in the mid 70's by Bobby Beausoleil with The Freedom Orchestra this mythic album of instrumental psychedelia gradually builds from trance inducing electronic passages to densley layered guitar driven songs. Includes the entire original soundtrack plus two extra pieces recorded shortly after Lucifer Rising by Bobby with The Freedom Orchestra adding up to over an hour and half of intense and other-wordly music. Also inlcudes an in depth description of the events which took place around the recording written by Bobby BeauSoleil himself as well as rare photographs.
Posessor of one of the finest voices of her generation, Southampton, UK-based Jaki Whitren was just nineteen when she recorded Raw But Tender. This a soulful collection of banjo-plucked, country-tinged folk-rock was originally released on CBS in 1974. Featuring members of Matthews Southern Comfort and Fotheringhay, as well as guitar legend Albert Lee, Raw But Tender shows a singular artist with a diverse range going from upbeat and almost funky to mellow singer songwriter inspired songs over the span of this great collection. Comes complete rare photgraphs and detailed notes by Jaki herself.
And finally we bring you one of the most-loved British Psychedelic albums of all time, The Open Mind is a hard-rocking collection that sank without trace upon its original release in 1969. This definitive reissue comes complete with both sides of their two ultra-rare non-album 45s and detailed liner notes, making it the most comprehensive collection of their music ever assembled.
There's lots of amazing stuff on the horizon - The second installment in the Anonymous saga will be available at the end of April. Following the mind-blowing album, 'Inside The Shadow", Anonymous changed their name to J.Rider and released the one off album, "No Longer Anonymous", which is a slicker, more refined take on the bands sound, but still remains an essential piece. Frontman and chief songwriter, Ron Matelic, is still at the top of his game, delivering excellent songwriting in the vein of The Byrds and CSNY.
Urban Waste was part of the New York renaissance of hardcore punk in the early 1980's.
There will be another round of Ya Ho Wha 13 records to be released - "The Lovers & The Chariot", "Contraction" & "The Operetta". Hopefully, this is just the beginning of a longer list of Ya Ho Wha reissues to come.
The illusive NWOBHM 7" series that we've been promising is on the way. We're hopeful that we can release this at the end of the month. Some titles that we hope to have ready will come from bands like: Witchfynde, 100% Proof, Bashful Alley, Gaskin & more.
We'll be collaborating with Illinois based Lion Productions on a couple of releases to bring you Classical M's, "Bad Guys: The Complete Collection" and Odyssey's, "Setting Forth". We hope this will be the beginning of a beautiful friendship as Lion has managed to release some of the most excellent reissues out there (Plastic Cloud, Friends, Agincourt, etc). Much more on these releases soon...
This is only the tip of the iceberg, so please stay tuned for more news and as always, thank you for your support.

New Releases 3/22
by stormchild
We're very pleased to announce 4 new releases that are available now. The first is the soundtrack to Kenneth Anger's cult classic film, Lucifer Rising. If you're unfamiliar with the record & movie, please be sure to check out both. Also, please read the very extensive liner notes for what is sure to be one of the most interesting and amazing stories you've heard in a while - this record was made by Bobby BeauSoleil (with The Freedom Orchestra) while he was in prison.
We're also releasing one of Britain's best-loved Psychedelic albums - The Open Mind. Released in 1969 to little notice, this record has gone on to be a collector's favorite. Next up is the beautiful Jaki Whitren with a soulful collection of country-tinged Folk-Rock. And last, but certainly not least, we have a collection of Soul-Funk instrumentals from Moody, titled "The Gentle Rain". This album was conceived and arranged by Nick Ingman, whose work adorns Radiohead, David Bowie, Bjork, Oasis and countless others. This is a goldmine for fans of synthesizers, beats and basslines! It should also be noted that all three of these records come with extensive liner notes that are only available with a full album purchase.

Other Music alliance & new releases
by stormchile
Hello All,
It's about time we got a new Anthology update out there, so here goes. We're pleased to announce that selected Anthology titles will be available with the folks at Other Music (New York's finest Indie retailer) once they launch their new digital download site. The OM site should be up and going within the next month and we'll keep you posted on that.
And now, onto our new releases.....
For fans of Pentagram (or anything Doom related for that matter), the Bedemon release will be right up your alley. Originally conceived in 1973 by future Pentagram guitarist Randy Palmer, the Bedemon sessions took place sporadically from 73-86. It features none other than Bobby Liebling on Vocals and Geof O'Keefe on Drums - a raw and classic slice of Doom history!
On a more acoustic note we bring you the Wizz Jones classic, 'The Legendary Me'. An undisputed giant of modern folk and one of the finest acoustic guitarists Britain has ever produced, Wizz Jones has influenced musicians from Eric Clapton, John Renbourn and Ralph Mctell to Billy Connolly, Bert Jansch and even Rod Stewart. This classic 1970 set finds him playing a mixture of standards and originals, many by his old friend Alan Tunbridge, and all arranged in his inimitable style. This release comes complete with detailed liner notes, rare photographs and three previously unreleased bonus tracks.
Long established as a cult classic and collector's grail, Mick Burgoyne and Leigh Dolphin's sole album is presented here with their full co-operation. Recorded in 1971 when they were just 19 and fresh to the studio, Fresh Maggots is one of the best distillations of folk and psychedelia ever recorded. Combining gentle, pastoral songs with violent fuzz guitar, it's a highly unusual and powerful record that enjoyed extravagant acclaim on release. Despite selling poorly, it has gone on to acquire a major reputation amongst acid folk fans, who will be especially eager to hear the seven bonus tracks included here (including the duo's rare non-album single and a previously unheard live radio session from 1971).
Thai Beat A Go-Go Vol 1 is an incredible collection of ultra rare recordings from Thailand in the 1960's. This volume focuses on red hot Thai curry rock n roll, including cosmic instrumental surf bands, crazy garage/beat bands, mystic go-go organ/wild guitar rave-ups and exotic female singers all with a totally otherworldly Thai flavor. These recordings have a sound that's completely inexplicable despite the use of standard rock instrumentation and song structures combining a fascinating and primal version of rock n roll, surf, and r 'n' b - sometimes all in one song. Two more illuminating volumes in this series will follow soon.
As promised in our previous update we bring you the never before released private press LP from Connecticut's White Flame. The album, "American Rudeness", was recorded in New Haven in 1978 and it wasn't until recently when a good friend of ours discovered a sealed copy at an estate sale in Bridgeport (!) that it came to our attention. The music on this gem most certainly owes a debt to detroit Proto-Punkers like The Stooges and MC5, but also shifts direction and hits territory that touches on the sleazier, druggier Berlin-era Iggy. What a find! Special thanks to Chris Ruggiero!
We are extremely pleased to bring you our most recent collaboration with Swedens Subliminal Sounds label. Baby Grandmothers were a short-lived Swedish band, but one of the most prolific and unique psychedelic, modal, experimental power-trios to emerge out of the Scandinavian psychedelic underground-scene. Although hailing from Stockholm, Sweden they only released one single in Finland, which has since become one of the most sought after pieces of vinyl from the era. Baby Grandmothers were formed out of the ashes of legendary R&B / beat band T-Boones in the summer of 1967. Guitar-wiz Kenny Håkansson joined the band in 1965 and with the group down to a trio they drifted into the psychedelic sounds of the time and in August 1967 released the single "I Want You", which definitely was the first hard-rock recording ever made in Sweden. The band was then re-christened Baby Grandmothers by the co-founder of the newly opened psychedelic club Filips, for which he needed a house-band. Filips was the legendary breeding ground for bands such as Hansson & Karlsson, Pärson Sound, as well as orgiastic all night jams with foreign luminaries such as Jimi Hendrix and the Mothers of Invention. Baby Grandmothers also supported Jimi Henrix on his Swedish tour in 1968 and then later turned into Mecki Mark Men, who became the first Swedish rock band to tour the US. Founding member Kenny Håkansson went on to form the highly influential Kebnekajse, who created the Swedish electric folk psych sound. This unique collection brings live-recordings made at Filips, their impossibly rare single and a rare live recording made in Finland. Painstakingly collected and researched by Dungen's guitarist Reine Fiske. Includes a lengthy and fascinating biography.
For fans of New Wave and Synth pop we bring you 'Music While You Work' a collection of tracks recorded in the early 80's by England's 1,000 Mexicans. One of the most innovative and creative independent bands of the 1980's, combining quality pop songwriting and rhythmic and harmonic richness with their unique touches of experimentalism and eccentricity. For those who like a healthy dose of humor with their pathos.
And finally we have The Truth by D.R. Hooker. Easily one of the rarest US psych LPs. The Truth was recorded in Connecticut in 1972 and might very well be the ultimate North American acid rock album ever. No hype here, just incredible talented music. Everything is absolute perfection, the wailing fuzz guitar, the psychy arrangements, his awesome voice, layers of instruments and well-crafted songs. One of those albums that keeps revealing new depths even when you've played it a hundred times. True psychedelia. Includes 6 bonus tracks not included on the original LP.
That about does it for now - We're working on a ton of great stuff for March, which will include the Lucifer Rising soundtrack (music made by Bobby Beausoleil with the Freedom Orchestra for Kenneth Anger's cult classic film) and we'll finally see our NWOBHM digital 7" series come to fruition. Much, much more, which we'll expand on in the next newsletter. Thanks for the continued support...
